The Storm and The Calm

2010, HD video installation

Part 1 - The Calm premiere at the 2010 Scotiabank Nuit Blanche.

Created with the support of a Canada Council Media Arts Research and Creation Grant for Emerging Artists and an Ontario Arts Council Visual Art Grant for Emerging Artists.

The Storm and The Calm is a video installation in two parts, which is loosely inspired by the fate of a young sailor named James Lawson. Lawson was the sole survivor of the crew of the Lord Ashburton, a cargo schooner that crashed against the towering basalt cliffs of Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick in 1857. Lawson subsequently lived out the rest of his life on the island, never to return home to Denmark. Through the lens of this particular shipwreck story, I explore the broader archetype of the “castaway”. From The Odyssey, to The Tempest and Robinson Crusoe, the lone survivor of a shipwreck is a potent metaphor for exploring self-discovery through isolation.
